Dallin H. Oaks: The Theory of Linguistic Relativity

Writer's picture: Atticus AguirreAtticus Aguirre

Dallin H. Oaks, the First counselor of the First Presidency of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, took the stage using the theory of linguistic relativity in the October 2022 General Conference. His message transcended the boundaries of religious doctrine. Throughout his talk, he uses the theory of linguistic relativity to convey the universal principles of generosity, service, and compassion. He uses this linguistic topic to convey a message beyond our church's religious doctrine.

Oaks starts by explaining the humanitarian work of the Church, revealing a staggering $906 million in expenditures and over 6 million volunteer hours in 2021 alone. Through these figures, he laid the groundwork for his address. Drawing from linguistic relativity, Oaks emphasized the inadequacy of these numbers in fully capturing the depth of the Church's service. He acknowledged the unreported personal services of individual members, highlighting the diverse ways we contribute to humanitarian causes. By doing this, Oaks shows the idea that the extent of our collective impact goes beyond any numbered measurements.

Oaks later referenced a revelation from 1831, emphasizing individual agency in doing good and bringing righteousness to the world. This aligns with linguistic relativity, where language shapes our perception of reality. By framing humanitarian efforts as a manifestation of personal agency, Oaks underscored the importance of each person's role in alleviating suffering.

Next, Oaks then uses linguistic relativity by quoting the Book of Mormon, emphasizing the connection of service to our fellow beings and service to God. This connection, according to Oaks, is a universal truth that transcends religious boundaries and sticks with individuals of various beliefs.

In the end, Dallin H. Oaks successfully used the theory of linguistic relativity throughout his talk to convey a message of universal compassion and service. By emphasizing the individual agency, connection of service, collaborative efforts with diverse organizations, and much more. Oaks transcended religious doctrine to deliver a powerful call to action that resonates with all of humanity, not just the members.
