After this week's reading, I was able to gain insights and a greater understanding of communication. I like how at the beginning it taught about the origin of the word "communication" from the Latin word "communis." I like how the text showed communications importance across different species, and various definitions provided by scholars. The text also helps show the functions of communication. It emphasizes the role it plays in education, information, culture and social contact, stimulation, counseling, expression of feelings, and entertainment. I also liked the reading because it provided insight into the nature and components of mass media. I learned about mass audience characteristics, mass communication routes, and the many types of mass media, such as print, electronic, and digital formats. Furthermore, the text taught me about the purposes of the media, such as information transmission, education, entertainment, and persuasion. The linear model of mass communication, which included senders, messages, media channels, recipients, gatekeepers, and feedback, gave a great explanation of how mass communication operates. I also noticed how it introduced the key components of communication, such as the sender, message, channel, receiver, noise, feedback, context, and effect. Some things that I agreed with throughout the reading is how complex communication really is. Before I never really batted an eye at communication and how it affects everything. I agree with the points made about how important it was in society and people's lives. Something that stood out to me was if you put someone alone with no communication. They would go mad and become miserable. This helped me understand the true depth of communication. After the reading I have found new interest in how communications had impacted the advancements of technology. Another thing that got me thinking was the how communication has evolved throughout the years and why it needed changes in the first place.
